The different media have different indices of refraction. We will call the index of refraction of the first medium ηi and the index of refraction of the second medium ηt.
When a ray passes from one transparent medium (e.g. air) across a boundary into another medium (e.g. water) it is "bent". We can calculate the direction of transmitted ray using Snell's Law.
